Government bolsters marine safety regulations to protect fishermen's lives

Accra, Feb. 20, – Ghana's Government is intensifying regulatory oversight and enforcement to secure the marine sector, Mrs Emelia Arthur, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, has announced.

Delivering the keynote at the sixth Ocean Centres Ghana workshop, the Minister stressed multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable ocean management amid climate change, pollution, and overfishing threats.

The forum—under theme "Safer Fishing, Stronger Livelihoods: Vessel Safety, Worker Welfare, and Emergency Readiness"—highlighted stark realities: 14,000 fishing vessels (mostly artisanal) employ 300,000+ fishermen, with 90% suffering injuries annually.

"If safety fails, everything else fails," Mrs Arthur declared. "Safety cannot be imposed—it must be understood, accepted, practiced. Worker welfare is central."

Mr Tolu Lacroix (UN Global Compact Network Ghana Executive Director) demanded urgent policy frameworks, while Nana Boakye Boampong (Ocean Centres Country Lead) urged infrastructure upgrades and regulatory influence.

Government commits full support for safety initiatives protecting coastal economies and livelihoods.

Participants called for enhanced stakeholder synergy to bridge critical safety gaps.
