Ghana to identify victims of Burkina Faso jihadist attack – Interior Minister

Accra, Feb. 16,  – Ghana is working with Burkina Faso authorities and its Ouagadougou mission to identify victims of a jihadist attack in Titao that killed seven Ghanaian tomato traders and injured three others on February 14, 2026.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed on Accra television that suspected jihadists attacked a truck carrying Ghanaian traders returning with tomatoes, separating men from women before shooting the men and burning the vehicle.

Casualties:

  • 7 Ghanaian men killed (truck driver + 9 traders)

  • 3 injured (1 critical, 2 stable)

  • 8 Ghanaian women survived

The surviving women are assisting identification using victims' Ghana Cards and personal knowledge, as bodies were severely burnt and decomposing.

Burkina Faso authorities plan burials today with Ghanaian mission participation. Ghana requested DNA samples pre-burial, but decomposition necessitated urgent action.

Minister Mohammed-Mubarak extended condolences and prioritised family notifications before public disclosure.

Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed consular support. Titao attacks reflect deteriorating security threatening longstanding Ghana-Burkina tomato trade within ECOWAS.
