Accra, Feb. 12, – Mr. Gabriel Agambilla, Founder of Alagumgube, has hailed the recent surge in demand for Ghana's traditional Fugu (smock) fabric, sparked by President John Dramani Mahama's Zambia visit, as a major boost for local weavers and traders.
Industry Boom Triggered by Global Spotlight
Mr. Agambilla noted that what began as online trolling by Zambians calling the President's Fugu a "blouse" evolved into continent-wide popularity, with Ghanaians mounting a spirited cultural defense.
Urgent Call for Protection
However, Mr. Agambilla urged President Mahama and stakeholders to implement safeguards:
Exclusive rights for local producers
Crackdown on counterfeit Fugu
Prevent foreign exploitation of the trend
He warned that without action, fake versions could undermine quality and rob authentic producers of deserved gains.
"Local Fugu producers stand to benefit most from this heightened demand," he emphasized.
