CSIR Steps Up Research Commercialisation Drive

Accra, Feb. 13, – The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has established a dedicated Commercialisation Directorate to accelerate market uptake of innovations from its 13 research institutes, fulfilling its mandate under the CSIR Act 1996 (Act 521).

Acting Environment Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah disclosed this in Parliament, outlining the directorate's role in crafting marketing strategies, forging private sector partnerships, and building business development capacity across CSIR institutes.

The minister explained the structure targets "laboratory-to-market transition" through:

  • Collaborations with commercial players, SMEs, and agro-processors

  • MoUs embedding research outputs into private operations

  • Training programs covering post-harvest handling, food safety, product development, and packaging for small-scale processors

Showcase successes include Prekese syrup and Prue gari, promoted via food fairs, exhibitions, and open days to attract investors and policymakers.

Mr. Buah said the commercialisation push strengthens agro-processing value chains, enhances food/nutrition security, and creates sustainable business linkages in Ghana's agricultural economy.
