Government to Launch GH¢1 Billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund Following Otumfuo Mediation Report

Accra, Dec. 17,  – In line with its acceptance of the recommendations of the Otumfuo Mediation Report on the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, the Government has announced plans to establish a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund.

Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, stated that the prolonged conflict in Bawku has caused serious human, social, and economic setbacks, weakening livelihoods, social cohesion, and development prospects in the region.

He noted that insecurity over the years had significantly limited both public and private sector investment and stalled critical infrastructure projects.

In response, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to oversee the creation of the Bawku Revitalisation Fund, which will be implemented over a three-year period from 2026 to 2028. The Fund is aimed at reconstructing and developing priority infrastructure, including roads, healthcare facilities, schools, dam and irrigation systems for year-round agriculture, security installations, and economic and commercial facilities, to restore Bawku as a key economic and trading hub in Northern Ghana.

The Fund will be managed by a high-level committee chaired by Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, Minister for Finance and Acting Minister for Defence. Other committee members include Mr. Donaltus Akamuguri, Upper East Regional Minister, and Mr. Mahama Ayariga, Majority Leader, Leader of Government Business in Parliament, and MP for Bawku Central, representing MPs from the area.

The Government also called on all traditional authorities, political leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, religious bodies, development partners, and the broader citizenry to support the reconciliation and peace-building process in a spirit of unity, restraint, and patriotism.

Reiterating the guidance of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Government emphasized that there are no winners or losers in this mediation process. President Mahama urged all parties to adhere faithfully to the Mediation Report’s recommendations to ensure lasting peace and national stability.

The statement expressed gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahama Sheriga II, the Bawku Naba Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and all other stakeholders whose cooperation contributed to the success of this historic mediation effort.
