ACP Warns: Denying Sex in Marriage May Constitute Emotional Abuse

Dambai (Oti Region), Dec. 17,  – Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dennis Fiakpui, Oti Regional Deputy Commander, has cautioned that withholding sexual intimacy from a spouse may be classified as emotional abuse under Ghana’s Domestic Violence Act 732 of 2007.

ACP Fiakpui explained that women who refuse sexual relations with their husbands could face emotional abuse charges, with convictions carrying a potential jail term of up to two years.

He emphasized that the law applies equally to men who deny their wives sexual relations, urging spouses who feel emotionally abused to report the matter to the police.

“If a husband refuses to eat your food, comes home late, or otherwise causes emotional distress, the affected partner can lodge a complaint at DOVVSU,” ACP Fiakpui stated.

He also noted that women who refuse sex to their husbands can be similarly reported and investigated under the law.
