Amanfrom Camp Prisons named Kumasi Metro Best Farmer for 2025

Amanfrom (Ash), Dec. 5, – Amanfrom Camp Prisons has been adjudged the overall Best Farmer in the Kumasi Metropolis for the 2025 Farmers’ Day celebration.

The institution, which has been engaged in crop and livestock production for more than 20 years, maintains an extensive agricultural operation comprising a 40-acre palm plantation, 24 acres of maize, 900 catfish, 300 poultry birds, and 270 pigs.

It also keeps about 70 goats, sheep, and rabbits, in addition to various acreages of vegetable cultivation.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), which marked this year’s celebration under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” honoured 13 distinguished farmers across multiple award categories. These included Metro Best Crop Farmer, Best Female Farmer, Best Poultry Farmer, Best SHS in Practical Agriculture, Best JHS in Practical Agriculture, and Best Primary School in Practical Agriculture.

Mr. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, Chief Executive of the KMA, applauded Amanfrom Camp Prisons for its commitment to prisoner welfare and for its significant contribution to agricultural production within and beyond the metropolis.

He noted that the Department of Agriculture had made remarkable strides in enhancing food production and supporting farmers across the city.

He said crop cultivation, ruminant production, poultry, and fish farming continued to flourish in areas such as Daban, Bantama, Amanfrom, Santasi, and Nhyiaeso.

Mr. Boadi cited the success of vegetable farmers in Santasi, who are producing spring onions, lettuce, cauliflower, and tomatoes for both local markets and institutions including the Chinese Mart, facilitated by reliable year-round irrigation systems.

He added that ruminant, poultry, and fish farming remain vibrant economic activities in Buokrom, Moshie Zongo, Akwatialine, Ohwim, Amanfrom, Santasi, and Daban, benefiting over 1,920 registered farmers who have received grants, training, and access to improved technologies.

The KMA, he said, has deepened collaborations with various actors across the agricultural value chain - processors, markets, input suppliers - to enhance productivity and expand opportunities for farmers.

He pointed out that ongoing market price data collection continues to improve decision-making, while partnerships with Amanfrom and Kumasi Central Prisons have strengthened agricultural ventures in the metropolis.

Mr. Boadi projected that the Assembly, through its Agric Department, would scale up farmer registration, intensify technical support, establish demonstration fields, and work closely with value-chain partners to ensure sustained growth in line with the Feed Ghana Programme.
