Accra, June 8, - MTN-Ghana in
collaboration with Netplast and Zoomlion is to promote the use of recycled
plastic waste to protect the country’s environment.
The plastic waste is intended to
be used for the production of pavement bricks which can be used for the
construction of roads.
Mr Phillip Owusu-Gyamfi,
Director, Business Development of Netplast said the plastic pavement bricks was
more durable, stronger and 30 per cent less cheaper than the normal pavement
bricks use for the constructions of roads and other purposes.
He said Netplast has begun a
research and development on how to use waste on different ways and therefore
intend to use the motive to generate waste materials from our environment.
He said the opportunity would be
use to gather waste in order to support President Nana Addo Dankwah
Akufo-Addo’s vision of maintaining a clean society by 2020.
He said Netplast have so far
recycled just two per cent of plastic waste.
Mr Owusu-Gyamfi said: “if we are
able to come into collaboration with the individual, organizations and the
government, our environment will be protected”.
He explained that there were no
resources available to them which makes their work difficult and called for
partnership with other organizations.
“Let us see plastic waste as a
resource and invest in it to produce better things that can solve our problems.
Mr Ebenezer Tempe, Education
Portfolio Adviser at MTN-Ghana said the collaboration was to rid-off plastic
waste in the country.
This he said was a national
priority which must be supported by all, adding that, “the pavement bricks that
is been produce with plastics is 50 times stronger than the normal bricks”.
Mr Terkpe said: “MTN-Ghana was
using its 21 days Yellow Green Campaign” to work with Netplast in the gathering
and collection of plastics across the country.
This he said was an employee
volunteer programme to leverage on each support and expertise.
“Netplast has the capacity to
produce the bricks with plastics and we are helping in the gathering and
collection of the plastics through zoomlion”.
He said MTN-Ghana was creating
opportunities for economic growth; and targeting youth to empower with skills
for self-development.
