Tamale, May 16, - Soldiers from
the Kamina Barracks on Wednesday afternoon brutally assaulted police officers
in Tamale following a misunderstanding.
About eight police officers
sustained serious injuries and some of them were treated at the police clinic
in Tamale.
The incident led to tension in
Tamale main town and the regional police command area as the soldiers and the
police fired live bullets.
GNA gathered that a soldier, who
was granted bail at a court in Tamale on Wednesday morning, ran away from a
police criminal investigations department in Tamale where a caution statement
was being taken from him.
Police chased the soldier and
arrested him at the Bank of Ghana area in town but other soldiers on station at
the area were not happy about the situation and pounced on the policeman
beating him mercilessly.
Later, soldiers massed up in
their vehicles going round installations being guarded by police officers in
Tamale town and beating any police personnel in sight.
The police also moved to the regional
police headquarters in an attempt to attack the police forcing police officers
on duty to fire warning shots.
The Regional Minister and other
members of the Regional Security Council rushed to the Regional police
headquarters and held a meeting with the police commander in a bid to calm down
tension among the officers.
Earlier this year, there were
clashes between soldiers and police in Tamale, following which a peace march
was held between them to promote peace and collaboration in the discharge of
their duties.
