Wa, March 10, – The Rotary Club of Wa has commenced the
distribution of 620 reading glasses free-of-charge to teachers in the Wa West
and Wa East districts of the Upper West Region.
The reading glasses, which were
donated by the Rotary Club of Windsor, Canada, are meant to improve the reading
capacity of teachers to perform their duties well.
Mr Alhassan Inusah Agambire, the
Vice President of the Rotary Club, Wa, told the Ghana News Agency in an
interview during the distribution at the weekend that the gesture was part of
the implementation of the “Sight for Productivity” Project.
He said as part of the literacy
and education campaign activities, the Club undertook a survey, which revealed
that many teachers in the two districts had sight problems, which was affecting
their reading ability.
Mr Agambire said it was based on
that that the Rotary Club of Wa contacted Dr Godfred Bacheyie, a member of the
Rotary Club of Windsor, to facilitate the donation of the glasses after a visit
to the Region.
Dr Zakarea Alhassan Balure, the
Manager of Bliss Eye Care, and a member of the Rotary Club of Wa, is leading
the distribution of the glasses to the teachers.
Madam Grace Tanye, a Kindergarten
Teacher at Nako in the Wa West District, recounted to the GNA how she often
struggled to read due to poor sight.
She said she heaved a sigh of relief
when she could easily read after she put on her new glass and expressed
gratitude to the Rotary Club for the support.
The exercise received high
patronage from the teachers and other education officials on the first day of
distribution indicating how serious the problem was among teachers in the
Region.
