Tarkwa (W/R), February 14,-Three
men have been sentenced to a total of 45 years imprisonment for conspiracy to
commit crime, robbery and possession of firearms and ammunitions without lawful
authority.
The three, Abudu Bashiru, an
illegal miner and a motor rider, Sulley Bawah and Kofi Kombart, both farmers.
The three, pleaded not guilty to
all the three counts but were convicted after trial.
The prosecution led by Chief Inspector
Faustina Celestina Anaman told the Tarkwa Circuit court, presided over by Mr
Emmanuel Bart-Plange Brew, that the complainants were friends and gold buyers
in Tarkwa.
She said all the convicts who are
to serve 15 years each, live at Bethlehem farm cottage near Bronkesie in Aowin
district in the western region.
The prosecution said on 29 April,
2017, the complainants went to Abochia village near Enchi and engaged the
services of Abudu to carry them on his Apsonic motor bike with registration
number M-ER-16.5234 around the various gold mining sites in order for them to
purchase gold.
Chief Inspector Anaman said he
agreed and took them to Omanpe areas where they bought some gold and returned
to Tarkwa.
She said on May 1, the
complainants went to Abochia again with an amount of 20,000 cedis, where they
met Abudu and arranged with him to transport them to Omanpe the next day to
enable them buy more gold.
She told the court that, Abudu
sensed that the complainants had huge sums of money on them, so planned with
Sulley who is his sibling and Kofi to rob them.
The prosecution said Abudu provided his
accomplices with two pump action guns and a pair of black face masks to carry
out the operation.
Chief Inspector Anaman said the
next day at about 0800 hours, Sulley and Kofi laid ambush in a nearby bush on
the Adjuom-Omanpe road for the complainants.
She said Abudu went for the
complainants from Abochia and rode to Adjuom and on reaching the spot where his
accomplices were waiting tooted the horn of his bike and slowed down.
The prosecution said Sulley and
Kofi wearing the masks came out from their hideout with pump action guns whilst
Abudu quickly alighted from the motor bike and ran into the bush.
The two then snatched the
complainants’ bag containing gold valued 1,025 cedis and an amount of 14,660
cedis and bolted.
The complainants reported the
case to the police and Abudu was arrested on the same day, upon interrogation
he mentioned the names of Sulley Bawah and Kofi Kombart as his accomplices.
The prosecution said he led the
police to Sulley's house at about 11:00 pm where they arrested him together
with Kofi.
She said the Police conducted a
search in Sulley's room and found one locally manufactured double barrel
pistol.
According to the prosecution
Sulley also led the police to a distance of about 20 meters from his farm
cottage and they found the complainant's bag containing the gold and money
which he has hidden in a tree by his cocoa farm.
Chief Inspector Anaman said the
Police proceeded to Kofi's cottage and retrieved two pump action guns concealed
in a fertilizer sack under his bed and a small black bag containing 33 pieces
of AA and BB live cartridges.
She said the convicts were not
enable to produce documents covering all the weapons retrieved from them.
