Accra, Jan. 31, - Mr Makafui
Awuku, Chief Executive Officer of the “Mckingtorch Creatives” on Wednesday
called for the prioritisation of plastic waste recycling to deal with the
filth.
He said since Ghana produces
about 1.7 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, “We need a sustainable way
of dealing with plastic waste to help the country develop in all aspects”.
Mr Awuku whose company uses
plastic bottles to create dustbins and laundry baskets told the Ghana News
Agency in an interview that the country needs a holistic plan to recycle
plastic waste and protect the environment.
He advised Ghanaians to patronise
local products, which would help empower local companies “our taste for anything
foreign is rather financially empowering these countries while we destroy our
local ones”.
He said the company Mckingtorch
had created solutions for the plastic waste menace in the country and called on
companies in the waste management sector to patronise their products, which was
more durable than the imported ones.
Mr Awuku said; “Where there is
waste, there is opportunity, and there is a lot of waste in the system not just
physical waste but in all aspects of the economy”.
He encouraged young people to
take advantage of waste and “think about solutions you could create to resolve
unemployment issues in the country”.
Mr Awuku noted that, Nii Adjei
Sowah, the Chief Executive Officer of had expressed interest in the project and
hoped for positive results to find immediate solution to Ghana’s huge problem.
“Fabricating the frames,
installing the bottles, spraying them, installing liners, adding a label and
testing for its durability” was the process of creating the product, Mr Awuku
revealed to the GNA.
He said the bigger and smaller
dustbins took about 160 and 58 bottles respectively, whereas the laundry basket
and the Christmas tree took 70 and 396 bottles each.
Mr Awuku said the products would
be provided to all secondary schools in the country, which would mean taking
millions of plastic bottles from the environment.
He told the GNA that, the
“Mckingtorch Creatives” brand had been in existence for two months and hoped to
see the project having lots of companies across the country in five years’ time.
