Labourer in court for robbery



Accra, Jan. 31, – A Labourer, Abdul Aziz Hamani from Niger, was on Wednesday put before an Accra Circuit Court on the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

Abdul Aziz, was said to have conspired with one Divine, now at large and robbed Wisdom Donkor of his Toyota Yaris Taxi, worth GH₵33,000.00.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh to reappear on February 13.

The facts of the case, as presented by Superintendent of Police Patience Mario were that the complainant is a taxi driver, while the accused person is a labourer and a Nigerien.

She said on January 22, at about 2300 hours the complainant was coming from Madina and on reaching Haatso, near Unity Oil Filling Station, Abdul and Devine stopped him and requested that, he take them to Westland.

She said the complainant agreed and charged them an amount of GH₵15.00, but they offered to give him GH₵10.00

The Prosecutor said on reaching Ready Filling Station, he saw another young man standing by the road side and the two asked the complainant to pick him, which he did.

She told the court that when they got to GIMPA junction, Abdul Aziz and his accomplice alighted, and when the complainant was waiting to take his money, the third guy they picked on the way slapped him hard on the face.

Mrs Mario, said the complainant then got out of the taxi, to engage the guy in a fight. At that moment the three rushed to board the taxi, but in the process the complainant managed to hold Abdul Aziz, while the other two managed to escape with the taxi.

She said the complainant then called for assistance and the accused person arrested and sent to the Westland Police post where a complaint was made.

Abdul Aziz denied the offence in his caution statement.
