Accra, Jan. 17, – An Accra
Circuit Court has convicted two persons who were engaged in acts that tend to
disturb public peace and causing harm to fines.
Kofi Atakora, unemployed and
George Sefah, businessman were engaged in acts of disturbing public peace by
fighting and quarrelling at the at the court premises.
Kofi also caused harm to one Elizabeth
Darko, his ex-girlfriend.
The two pleaded not guilty to the
charges, but were found guilty by the court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong
Adjin-Doku after trial.
The two were both sentenced to a
fine of 10 penalty units each or in default serve 20 days each in prison on the
charge of disturbing public peace.
Kofi was additionally sentenced
to a fine of 100 penalty units or in default serve 12 months, for causing harm
and to pay a fine of GH¢500.00 to the complainant
Earlier the prosecution led by
Police Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that the complainant,
Elizabeth Darko, is a trader and lives at Kwabenya, while Kofi is unemployed
and a former boyfriend of the complainant lives at Dansoman.
He said George on the other hand
is a businessman and currently the boyfriend of the complainant lives at
Kwabenya.
He said the complainant and Kofi
met in China in 2004 when the complainant went on a business trip.
They entered into a relationship
until 2008 when they terminated the relationship and had since not been on good
terms.
The prosecution said Kofi in 2013
sued the complainant at the High Court over a property which according to him
they acquired during their relationship.
On February 2, which was their
court’s date, the complainant was accompanied by George to the court.
George, together with the
complainant were standing on the corridor leading to the court room waiting for
the court to start sitting.
Kofi, who was then in an angry
mood, went to them and pointed his fore finger at George’s face and a fight
ensued between them.
Mr Atimbire said Kofi sustained a
left red eye injury, and George also sustained a cut on the lips.
He told the court that, the
complainant attempted to separate them but Kofi punched her repeatedly on the
forehead and sustained deep cuts on her forehead.
He said they all reported at the
Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit and lodged complainants and medical
report forms were issued to them to go for treatment and report.
