Ejisu (Ash), Jan 25, – The
Ejisu-Juaben Municipality is making good progress in the fight to prevent
maternal deaths, Mrs. Josephine Ahorsu, the Municipal Health Director, has
announced.
The number of such deaths in the
area was down to two, last year, from the 2016 figure of nine.
She attributed this to
intensification of public health education and community outreach programmes,
adding that, all key performance indicators, were also showing positive.
She was speaking at the annual
performance review meeting held by the Municipal Health Directorate at Ejisu.
Mrs. Ahorsu said she was thrilled
by the strong support from the assembly, traditional rulers and other
stakeholders and said that needed to be sustained to assure the population of
quality healthcare.
The chief anaesthetist of the
Living Waters Medical Centre, Mr. Lawrence Tuuli, expressed concern about the
growing trend of accidental swallowing of coins by children.
He indicated that this was
becoming a major health concern and more should be done to provide protection
for children.
He said, the facility had to
perform surgery to remove coins stuck in the throat of eight children aged
between four and eight years, last year.
Within the first three weeks of
the New Year, two cases had aleady been seen, he added.
He said the facility, one of the
few in the Ashanti Region, with the capacity to remove small objects from the
throat, ear and nose, was becoming overwhelmed by the rising cases.
He therefore appealed to parents
to desist from giving out coins to children when they were going to school and
advised that in the event of any accident, help should quickly be sought at a
health facility.
Dr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Tinkorang,
the Regional Health Director, in an address read for him, praised health
workers for their hard work in the face of challenges.
The net result, he noted, had
been a significant improvement in health care services in the area.
