The bout championed by Streetwise Promotions in partnership with Errol Hawks Sports Management, is as part activities headline in celebration of Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary on March 6.
The fight dubbed ‘‘Freedom Fight’’ will offer boxing enthusiasts the opportunity to witness three World Boxing Council (WBC) International Title fights alongside other interesting undercards on Saturday.
Speaking at the launch, Commey (24-2-0, 22 KO’s) scheduled to lock horns with battle Slimani (26-2-0, 14 KO’s) in a12-round main event for the WBC International Silver Lightweight Title, said he is poised and focused to snatch the title from his opponent.
He said ‘‘the past is gone and I’ve put what happened in my previous fights behind. I’ll win this title and continue to win till, I become a world champion. I won’t disappoint my country’’.
On September 19, last year Commey travelled to Reading, Pennsylvania to challenge Robert Easter, Jr. for the vacant IBF Lightweight World Title, losing a very hard fought 12-round split decision.
He followed up that splendid performance by fighting Denis Shafikov on December and loss in same manner whilst his opponent has won three bouts recently including his triumph over Argentinian veteran Vicente Martin Rodriguez in a ten round unanimous decision on November 11 in Zwevezele, Belgium.
“The Baby Faced Terminator” Micah, currently the Commonwealth (British Empire) Bantamweight Champion, is set to electrify the Bukom as he faces Mexican Aguilar and he has sent a warning to him saying ‘‘ I will not lose this bout, I’ll finish Aguilar in this contest and all I need is support from Ghanaians.
I’ll make Ghana proud and show to the world what we made off’’.
The manager of Streetwise Boxing Promotions Michael Amoo-Bediako thanked the government for being a part of the event and added that ‘‘this will contribute to the boxers development to be World Champions’’.
The President of the Ghana Boxing Association Peter Zwennes admonished the boxers to trained well and stay focus ahead of the bout.
He mentioned that, if there’s nothing to celebrate in relation to the anniversary, boxing has produced a lot of success stories for the country hence needs celebration.
‘‘Boxing is the number one sport in Ghana and we need to celebrate it. And I know the Ghanaian boxers will surely make a mark on the night.
Zwennes called on corporate entities to associate with the event with the necessary support.
