Police Arrest Suspect in Mamprobi Baby Theft Case

Accra, Feb. 18 – Police have apprehended a 33-year-old cloth seller, Latifa Salifu, in connection with the alleged theft of a four-day-old baby boy from the Neonatal Ward of the Mamprobi Polyclinic.

The suspect was arrested by the Dansoman Divisional Police and is expected to be arraigned on Thursday.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Relations at the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, said the incident was reported on Tuesday, February 17, at approximately 1000 hours by Abigail Dzikpornu and another individual.

Police visited the polyclinic and took statements from the baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, who delivered the child on February 14, 2026. She explained that a woman dressed in a nurse’s uniform took the baby under the pretext of administering medication but did not return.

Supt. Obeng stated that the suspect was arrested on February 18, 2026, around 0340 hours at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Preliminary investigations showed no record of a recent delivery by the suspect at the hospital, suggesting the baby she was carrying was the one reported stolen.

The infant is currently in safe custody and has received medical attention.

Supt. Obeng urged hospitals and health facilities to enhance security measures, recommending visitor logs and strict verification procedures before babies are released to caregivers. She also appealed to hospital authorities to report any suspicious persons promptly to the police.
