Economy: GHAPROHA Alarmed by High Utility Tariffs

Tema, Feb. 12, – The Ghana Progressive Hotels Association (GHAPROHA) has raised serious concerns over escalating utility costs, warning that unreliable and expensive services threaten hotel sustainability nationwide.

National President Mr. Emmanuel Geadda Asando made the appeal during GHAPROHA's maiden 2026 meeting in Tema, urging the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to compel Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Water Company to improve service delivery and ensure fair billing.

Key Challenges Identified

Mr. Asando highlighted:

  • Persistent water shortages in Tema Metropolis forcing reliance on costly tankers

  • Excessive electricity bills disproportionate to poor service quality

  • High generator fuel costs due to frequent power outages

  • Multiple levies and fees from state agencies despite COVID-19 Levy abolition

"Hotels are being slapped with huge bills that don't justify the services rendered," he stated.

The Association warned that unresolved issues could derail tourism growth and investment, as hospitality remains central to Ghana's tourism value chain.

Mr. Asando called for urgent government-regulatory-industry collaboration to deliver sustainable solutions.
