Accra, Feb. 14, – President John Dramani Mahama has held high-level talks with António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on African security and democratic governance.
The meeting took place on the margins of the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Discussions centred on pressing security threats across the continent, particularly the worsening instability in the Sahel region, and broader efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and constitutional governance in African states.
Regional peace and stability featured prominently, with specific focus on developments in member countries of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES), where security conditions remain fragile.
President Mahama briefed the UN Secretary-General on his diplomatic engagements aimed at mediating tensions and supporting peace-building initiatives in the affected areas.
Mr Guterres acknowledged President Mahama’s forthcoming assumption of the African Union Chairmanship in 2027, commending Ghana’s longstanding leadership role, particularly within the West African subregion.
He pledged the United Nations’ full cooperation and support as Ghana prepares to take on the continental leadership position, noting the critical role the country is expected to play in addressing Africa’s security and governance challenges.
At the close of the meeting, Mr Guterres presented President Mahama with a commemorative gift — a copy of the UN Charter in all six official languages of the United Nations.
