Tema, Dec 16,- A huge settlement is developing around the West
African Gas Pipeline Company Limited’s (WAPCo) Regulatory and Metering Station
in Tema and its management is worried that any explosion would wipe out
families and generations.
Mrs Harriet Wereko-Brobbey,
General Manager, Corporate Affairs, says Tema city managers are indifferent to
the situation which could trigger huge crises.
Interacting with Journalists at
the Station, she said the natural gas pumped from Nigeria was odourless so if
the integrity of the pipelines were disturbed, the inhabitants of the
settlement who slash and burn and do all manner of risky things on its right of
way would not be able to detect a leakage.
She called for a practical
solution to the problem as the area in question was gradually becoming an
energy hub of the country with all its attendant fuels and machinery which
cannot coexist with human settlement.
WAPCo, as a gas transporter, has
facilities in Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Ghana. In Ghana it has a Regulating and
Metering Station in Takoradi and in Tema. These two facilities were sited in
these two locations to facilitate gas delivery to the Volta River Authority
(VRA).
