Takoradi, Dec. 18, – The
Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis is yet to be hit by the approaching Christmas
vehemence with barely nine days to the festive occasion.
A visit to the central business
district by the GNA on Saturday morning did not show much of brisk window or
real shopping by the public ahead of the Christmas celebration.
Christmas, has become a popular
celebration on the Christian calendar which also marks the end of the year and
as such many people make merry to express their happiness in making it to the
last month of the year.
Unlike this visit by the GNA,
previous visits had showed that people bought ahead of time to mark the
celebration particularly children’s wear and accessories for women.
Many of the shops owners and
attendants the GNA interviewed had low morale and were not enthused about sales
pattern since the beginning of December.
Mr Kweku Tiko, a shop owner who
deals in children wear said things were not moving as expected and prayed that
sales would pick up in the coming days.
Madam Vivian Adjei, who trades in
artificial hair extension also confirmed that the market had been slow adding,
“As the gods have been pacified, we pray it will translate into sales from next
week onwards”.
The market underwent a three-day
pacification exercise to appease the gods who according to sources were the
cause of low patronage at the market.
Mrs. Esi Baidoo, a shop owner who
compared last year to this year bemoaned the slow pace of patronage, adding
that it would be difficult to pay back loans if sales did not improve.
Most of the dealers in rice, oil
and other food products had no different story to tell, meanwhile, cold stores
around the market during the time of visit were offloading boxes of fish and
meat products ahead of the celebration.
The Metropolis was also yet to
experience any heavy vehicular traffic.
