Accra, Nov.26,- The Chairman of
the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sport Mr. Alex Agyekum has
dismissed claims that, the University of Ghana Sports Stadium has been
abandoned.
Mr. Agyekum made this known when
he was responding to claims by Mr. Kobena Mensah Woyome, a ranking member of
the youth and sports committee on sports development.
According to Mr. Agyekum, the
claims by Member of Parliament for South Tongu constituency, that the NPP
Government has abandoned the Legon sports stadium is never true saying “the
project was initially under the Ministry of Education, when it used to be
Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and therefore, the GETFund was actually
in charge of that project.
“In 2009 when we had Ministry of
Youth, Sports and Culture, now there has been official letters to revert the
funding of the project to the GETFund so it is factually not correct for Mr.
Woyome to say we have abandoned the project". He stated.
According to the Member of Parliament
for Mpohor constituency, the 2018 budget has taken notice of the need to
continue the stadium so it not correct to claim the Legon Stadium has been
abandoned and that "the LI on Sport Bill explained that 2017, the Ministry
will ensure that there is a completion of all the processes".
